India vs Pakistan. Who is better?

India and Pakistan started on a journey on the same day. 60 years later we are two nations on two different roads with different destinies, different identities and with a different outlook & vision for the future.

Both these nations, India and Pakistan when formed had a thousand dreams of making a nation where people could live in peace and with their head held high but after 60 years most of the dreams have remained a dream even now. But having said that India in lot many ways is ahead of Pakistan and better placed than Pakistan. Below is a short comparison in what ways India is better than Pakistan.

Economy:

India, with a GDP eight times more than that of Pakistan, has a much healthier, steady and rising economy. In case of the outbreak of a prolonged war, the economic stability of India would allow it to put up with the cost of war for a longer duration than Pakistan – provided they are the only belligerents.

Military:

India ranks 4th in the Global Firepower (GFP) ranking. India has an upper hand over Pakistan above the sea and also in air. Pakistan (ranked 17th in the GFP ranking) has no aircraft carriers. On the other hand, India has two aircraft carriers, one of which was recently commissioned. The Su-30 MKIs and soon to be purchased AH-64D Apache Helicopters secure air superiority over Pakistan.

Nuclear Power:

Pakistan, with an estimated 100-120 warheads, has a greater nuclear stockpile as compared to India (estimated 90-110 warheads). If the situation ever boils down to a nuclear war, India has a strict policy of “No First Attack.” India has boosted its nuclear triad – nuclear-armed strike aircraft, land-based inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and sea-based submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) – and now has a stronger nuclear deterrence capability.

Allies:

India has a healthy relation with Russia and Israel, who in the scenario of war, will most likely provide India with appropriate weapons. Pakistan’s relation with US has suffered a lot since the killing of Osama Bin Laden. On the other hand, India and the US share an extensive cultural, strategic, military, and economic relationship. So, in the scenario of a war, US may support India or have a neutral stand, but is most likely to get the UN involved to arbitrate. Pakistan may have a support from China, which can cause India problems on its eastern side. India has a stronger arm in this matter, as it has an Ally in Afghanistan on the other side of the Pakistani border.

Corruption:

Pakistan: 40% bribery rate

In Pakistan, about three-fourths of respondents perceive most or all of the police to be corrupt. Of the people who encountered either the police or the courts, nearly 7 in 10 had to pay a bribe. Sadly, people don’t feel things can change only a third think ordinary people can make a difference.

India: 69% bribery rate

In five of the six public services schools, hospitals, ID documents, police, and utility services more than half the respondents have had to pay a bribe. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fight against corruption has made a mark: 53% of the people think he is going it fairly or very well. And it has led to people feeling empowered, as 63% believe ordinary people can make a difference.

Women safety:

For all of Pakistan's ills, it remains a better place for women according to the UN. Both Pakistan and India have horrifically bad gender inequality, so I would say they are about tied at the same horrible level, but the UN says it's even worse in India. Just goes to show that women leaders like Sonia Gandhi or Benazir Bhutto aren't necessarily good for all the women not in leadership positions.

Sanitation:

The UN and UNICEF have both said that India has the world's worst public sanitation system. Economist issue or the other. Over half of India defecate in the great outdoors, as compared to about a quarter of Pakistan.

In the yet olden days when there weren't too many people around, defecating outdoors was well and good, but high population density's and bad sanitations spread AND cause diseases.

Freedom of PRESS:

The most important thing which Pakistanis do better than us. A comparatively free media which boldly takes stance against the ruling governemnt unlike India where with the change in government the loyalty of the media houses also changes. Read articles by renowned Pakistani journalists like Nadeem F Paracha, and please do see videos of journalists like Najam Sethi and Hassan Nisar on youtube and see how they openly criticise the government, its policies, people etc. which I think Indian media does not do to the extent it should, and is more concerned with "what the nation wants to know".

Cricket:

Cricket is the most played and adored sport in both India and Pakistan. These two countries have played against each other 194 times in all the three formats of the game.

Out of the matches played between these two, Pakistan leads in the numbers with 85 victories. India trails Pakistan in this sport and has 66 wins. The remaining 43 matches ended in either a draw or a no-result. No one actually knows wheather India is better or Pakistan in cricket .But one thing is for sure we must Thank pakistan for giving the world the Sultan of Swing, and one of thefavourite, Wasim Akram. The first to take 400 wickets in both Tests and ODIs . Also thank you for giving the world of cricket Reverse Swing. Not to forget other greats like Waqar Younis (deadly yorkers), Shoaib Akhthar (sheer pace) etc.

Hockey:

India and Pakistan have produced several hockey greats such as Dhyan Chand, Sohail Abbas and Shahbaz Ahmad Sr. The two nations have played a total of 165 international hockey matches against each other. In hockey, Pakistan once again tops the chart with 82 wins compared to the 53 Indian wins, while 30 matches ended in draws. Pakistan has scored 384 goals in these matches, while the corresponding number for India is 318.

Football

India is a well-known football loving country in South Asia and the two sides have faced against each other 23 times till date. Out of the 23 games played, India has won 10 head-to-head matches, while Pakistan has won only three.

Pakistan won their first match against India in the AFC Asian Cup in 1959, the second win came in 2003 at the SAFF Championship match and their latest victory against India was in 2005 in an international friendly match.

Development:

But if compared to Europe, North America, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and even China and South America, India and Pakistan look almost same facing same problems. For example. According to GDP per capita rankings for 2015 by IMF figures.

India: 139th

Pakistan: 140th

Who would win an all out war between Pakistan and India if no other country got involved?

a) If no Countries are involved

b) If major world powers are involved

At the outset, let me start off by saying that like the topic under which the OP has been filed (Hypothetical Battles), another Indo - Pak war seems very unlikely in the near future. Also, I am an Indian, so I am obviously biased towards India. However, for the purpose of this answer, I will try to stick more with facts and less with assumption about why I think India would have an upper hand in an India-Pakistan war. here's what I think will work in India's favor -

Military: India has a clearly larger military with access to more defense reserves, budgets and resources

2. Strategy: India has a policy of "No First Attack" if the situation ever boils down to a Nuclear War. In such a scenario, India's best bet will be to execute the reported Operation "Cold Start"to

neutralize the enemy before they could launch an attack.

3.Governance: India has been a stable democracy pretty much since the independence and partition. Unlike Pakistan, there has never been a tug of war between the Government, Military and the Intelligence Agency about who really runs the country.

In the unlikely scenario of a Nuclear War: According to a report by Natural Resources Defense Council, India apparently has lesser nuclear warheads (about 35) compared to Pakistan (about 48) [3]. It's natural to assume that any nuclear war will lead to a lot of casualties and destruction. That said, both the countries do not have enough nuclear weapons to destroy each other to Ashes. Assuming that the following key geographical targets are attacked in both countries, here's how the overall impact will look.

In such a post nuclear attack scenario, while India would have a slightly higher number of casualties, it will also proportionally wipe out a much larger picture from the Pakistani demographic. If there would be anything left for Pakistan to salvage by the end of it, India would still gain by having the advantage of a much larger military.

Financial Market:

In Goods Market Efficiency, India and Pakistan are at 95 and 100 respectively. For the sub-pillar of prevalence of trade barriers, Pakistan enjoys a much better ranking of 65 against India’s 100.

In Labour Market Efficiency, Pakistan and India are at 132 and 112. In the sub-pillars of country capacity to retain talent and the country capacity to attract talent, India is doing a lot better with a ranking of 42 and 46 against Pakistan’s 87 and 110 respectively.

For the pillar of financial market development, Pakistan and India stand at 72 and 51. For the ninth pillar of technological readiness, Pakistan ranks at 114 against India’s 121. Pakistan’s ranking is much better than India and almost all the sub-pillars of this main pillar.

For Market Size, India is one of the best in the world with an overall ranking of 3 against Pakistan’s 30. India sweeps Pakistan out of all the sub-pillars of market size.

For the last two pillars of business sophistication and innovation, India stands ahead of Pakistan and ranks at 57 and 49 against Pakistan’s 81 and 88.

With the statistics out there, there is is nothing more to say. I leave it to the readers to ponder over the facts cited in this nonpartisan survey and reach at a rational conclusion about the state of affairs of these two biggest south Asian economies.
